![]() Most of these artists were already trained in art when they moved to California, arriving between 1900 and the early 1920s, although many continued their education in California. Most of the Plein Air painters came from the East, the Midwest and Europe, and only a few of the early artists such as Guy Rose were actually born and raised in California. these artists were inspired by the clarity and force of the distinctive light of Southern California and by the region's endlessly intriguing motives of hill and meadow, desert and mountain, river and ocean". Patricia Trenton argued that the "common thread that binds these artists is the recognition and depiction of light through color, an interest fostered in part by the dissemination of the color theories of Michel-Eugene Chevreul and Albert Henry Munsell. ![]() Charles Desmarais, director of the Laguna Art Museum, noted that this phrase "is a misnomer if it implies any but the most tenuous connections to the theory-based art born in France decades before". We call the group of artists who responded to these ideas the California Impressionists, but that is not a name that they self-applied. In the 1890s, European ideas and painting techniques finally made their way to the west coast of the United States. In the 1930s, more modern styles became accepted, and the movement fell into decline. While impressionist-influenced painting remained popular in California well after it did in Europe or the Eastern United States, in the late 1920s impressionism was seen as old-fashioned and conservative. Organizations like the California Art Club, the Painters and Sculptors Club, San Francisco's Sketch Club, The Carmel Art Association, The Laguna Beach Art Association and the Los Angeles Museum of History, Art and Science played a key role in popularizing the work of the California Impressionists. The artists associated with California Impressionism were influenced by European Impressionism, and members such as Guy Rose and Alson Clark were educated and closely associated with European Impressionists. These artists gathered in art colonies in places like Carmel-by-the-Sea and Laguna Beach as well as in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pasadena, and even Giverny. ![]() The California Impressionists generally painted in a bright, chromatic palette with loose, painterly brush work that showed influence from French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. California Impressionism reached its peak of popularity in the years before the Great Depression. ![]() ![]() The California Impressionist artists depicted the California landscape from the south to the north - the foothills, mountains, seashores, and deserts of the interior and coastal regions. Considered to be a regional variation on American Impressionism, the California Impressionists are a subset of the California Plein-Air School. Their work became popular in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California in the first three decades after the turn of the 20th century. The terms California Impressionism and California Plein-Air Painting describe the large movement of 20th century California artists who worked out of doors ( en plein air), directly from nature in California, United States. Flat roofs are typically installed in warm climates.īuildings with flat roofs are more affected by extreme changes in temperature because there is less space for installation. The coating is subject to regular flat roof leak testing to ensure there are no leaks. Proper sealing of both the top coat and underlayer is critical to the roof’s integrity. ![]() Water removal options are time-consuming and can be expensive. A flat roof contractor will likely install added mechanisms to address proper drainage. The standing water can lead to the breakdown of roofing material or future leaks, especially along the seams. Water tends to puddle and stay on the roof. Flat roofs do not drain as efficiently as roofs with a pitch. Because they are recently developed products, there is no information about how long they will last.ĭraining, or rather lack of it is the biggest disadvantage. Some new materials such as PVC and polycarbonate roofing are becoming available. There are rubber shingles that can be installed along with rolled rubber roofing. The life expectancy is between ten and 15 years. Each of these is relatively inexpensive and easy to install. The material is bitumen, TPO, Thermoplastic Polyolefin, EPOM or rubber. Rolled roofing is used on the majority of flat roofs. There are not many options from which to choose. Industrial buildings and businesses that have flat roofs have to compensate for the weight on the interior. DisadvantagesĪs the areas of a flat roof increases, the stability decreases. If repairs or replacement are needed down the road, re-roofing is relatively painless and quick. Because flat roofs are quicker to install, the wait to move in is shorter. In the right setting, they are economical as long as they are adequately maintained. Flat roofs are substantially more stable than slanted roofs when the building is small. Flat roofs are easier to check and much safer. Care and caution should be taken any time a person climbs on a roof. They are easier to climb upon to inspect. In homes that need maximum interior space, flat roofs are a significant advantage.įlat roofs are typically more accessible than roofs that are sloped. Top floor apartments and finished attics are possibilities without the sloped walls produced by traditional pitched roofs. The list of possibilities for utilizing a flat roof is nearly endless.Ī flat roof also makes interior space more versatile. You can design a living roof that becomes an outdoor lounge area to relax or barbecue, or plant a garden on the rooftop. Flat roof solar racking installed on a flat roof is less evident from the ground than a sloped roof. Air conditioning units can be put on the roof instead of the ground. The second advantage is space can be used for other purposes. ![]() Installing things like solar panels, which save on electricity, and satellites-making repairs and cleaning gutters less expensive and easier to accomplish on flat roofs. There are fewer damage and repair costs over the lifespan of the roof. ![]() Installation of flat roofs is quicker and easier. Labor is cheaper due to less risk while installing a flat roof. It makes a flat roof very affordable for both installation and upkeep and maintenance. The flat roof insulation board is approximately 80 cents per foot. In the case of the example, we would extract the data of the last 12 months, but we can also use all for a complete history or specific dates. The third line is made up of much more specific parameters to make the request. In the second line we establish a variable, where we can put one or more words to analyze. For example, in order to avoid SSL errors on the request. The TrendReq() function allows us to do a first filtering of the data that we are going to request. pytrends.build_payload(lista_palabras, cat=0, timeframe="today 6-m", geo="ES")Īs you can see, it consists of 3 lines of code that, even if you don’t know anything about Python, you can easily understand. #We add all the parameters we want to the request (filtered)Ħ. #We establish a list variable that includes the word or words that we want to analyzeĤ. #We connect with Google Trends and pass some base parametersģ. Much of this information is available in the Pytrends documentation, but I’ll try to explain it in a simple way: 1. In order to extract data from Google Trends with Python, we need several lines of code that include the parameters that we mentioned before. These parameters help us to specify and filter our search much more. On the other hand, all of the above use certain parameters that are practically common among all of them. We will analyze later what we can do with each one and we will see the result through our notebook in Google Colab. These allow us to know almost completely what can be done with Pytrends and the data that we can obtain. In order to continue advancing and to be able to extract all the data we want from Google Trends, we must take into account what we can call API methods.īasically, these are parameters that we use to define what we want to do with the request we make and to obtain a response. When executing the previous code we will see how different packages and libraries are installed. ![]() #Importamos las librerías que vamos a utilizar To start with, we need to install pytrends in our Google Colab notebook and import the libraries we need. In the movie, which I’ve never seen, Dolly and her girls sing to mourn the shuttering of their whorehouse, but they could have been narrating my untethered thoughts of the previous three months: “Maybe I’ll sleep real late / Maybe I’ll lose some weight / Maybe I’ll clear my junk / Maybe I’ll just get drunk.” I don’t remember the last time I so deeply related to a song, though I’m sure, whatever it was, it wasn’t about prostitutes.īut “Hard Candy Christmas” was just my wallowing music a cheerier song became the sound track for my daily work of pecan-tin assembly and shelf restocking. “Hard Candy Christmas,” the great Dolly Parton solo version from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas motion-picture sound track, was in heavy rotation on the station and quickly became the secret, albeit comically literal, anthem of my disoriented underemployment. ![]() But now I’m inclined to believe it’s for the sake of holiday retail employees-offering a synthetic place for their minds to drift toward, away from the maddening, small realities at hand. I used to believe stores played incessant Christmas music to anesthetize shoppers. During this time, my one reliable coping mechanism was to give myself over to the power of our management-mandated holiday-themed satellite radio station. Soon it did not matter if the children were screaming out of delight or distress, if the last-minute shoppers were frazzled or friendly, if I had to seal ten bags of gum balls or ten dozen-I was caught in a loop of seasonal and existential despair. My shifts were a sticky whorl of nuts and sugar and ecstasy and misery. But in my vague desperation I had forgotten about humans’ terrific knack for rendering even the most ostensibly pleasant pursuits completely soul crushing, and how that tendency increases as the winter days darken. I felt adrift and thought tending to a candy store, such a bastion of simple pleasures, might anchor me more firmly to the world, and also I thought that money might be a thing I’d might want to have again. I took the gig shortly after finding myself laid off from the job I’d had for the last four years as an editor at a music magazine. The general effect was that of being buried inside the holiday stocking of a child who’d been very, very good that year-along with the child himself, and a hoard of his less well-mannered friends and their overstressed, oblivious parents. On the sales floor, the shelves were heavy with saltwater taffy and boxes of truffles and delightfully analog toys-balsa gliders, pick-up sticks, chunky wooden puzzles. A red-and-green decorating scheme carried throughout the shop-I could not escape it, even when I retreated, as I sometimes did, to the store’s one bathroom, also tinged with red and green, just to shut out the world for a minute or two. In the world of candy stores, and this candy store in particular, Christmas is a perpetual condition that just happens to spike at the end of the year.
